The Omnar CX38-28 reuses the existing glass elements and aperture blade assembly from the Contax T and T2 cameras, and rehouses them in a newly designed optical block which allows the entire 60mm image circle to be fully projected onto the film or digital sensor plane.

This optical block is then housed in our rangefinder coupled, close-focusing Omnar platform for m-mount Leica rangefinder cameras. The effective focal length of these lenses is 37.5mm, which is a very close match to the Leica M4-M6 era 35mm frame lines. With that said, in our experience, it is also very easy to use with all Leica 35mm frame lines with little additional thought to framing.

It is also possible for the Omnar CX35-28 to be mounted on mirrorless cameras with an adapter. Thanks to the size of the image circle, it is even possible for this les to be mounted effectively on Fuji GFX and Hasselblad XCD medium format cameras. If you would like to read more about using this lens on medium format digital cameras, you can find an article on 35mmc here.

To keep the lens as portable as possible, we integrated the aperture control ring and front E40.5 filter thread into the same component design, yielding a mere 17mm protrusion off camera.  Weight is kept to a keen 120 grams, while still retaining an all brass helicoid design.

This first batch of CX38-28 lenses is made up of a total of 17 lenses. There were two prototypes, one production run test lens, two lenses made for a couple of our closest, regular customers, and 12 production run lenses. The 12 lenses available here comprise eight matte black, two silver and two high gloss black with antique brass. Once this production run is sold out, we will not be producing a second run until at least the end of 2024, possibly later.

Please note, whilst we are not currently accepting Contax cameras to convert the lenses on a one-off basis, we are open to taking them in part exchange against our first limited batch of CX38-28 lenses. If you would like to discuss this, please get in touch.

Leica M Mount Cameras

On Leica film cameras, the Omnar CX38-28 lens performs identically to how it performed on the original Contax T & T2 cameras, just with the added benefit of full manual control.

It also performs fantastically on all Leica digital rangefinders without colour shift into the corners. Especially on Leica rangefinders, and indeed other brand mirrorless cameras with thicker sensor stacks, some field curvature might be found toward the edges of the frames that can cause corner softness.

This minor aberration aside, this Sonnar formula T* coated lens performs exactly how you might hope on both film and digital, producing fantastic colours, wonderful bokeh, good sharpness and superb 3D pop.

Fuji GFX and Hasselblad XDC

Thanks to the large 60mm imaging circle, the Omnar CX38-28 can also be used effectively on Fuji and Hasselblad digital medium format cameras.

When mounted on these cameras, the lens gives an effective 29mm focal length and f/2.2 aperture.

It is worth noting though that on earlier 50mp Sony IMX161 sensor based cameras there is some colour shift toward the edges as can be seen in our demo pictures here. The later 100mp BSI Sony IMX461 sensor based cameras do not suffer tis issue. It is, of course, also possible to remove this colour shift in post, or avoid it altogether by converting images to monochrome.
